Boxee is betting that a combination of free basic TV channels with live video from services like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo and others would be enough for many people to end their expensive cable subscriptions. Possibilities for work, too. Boxee Live TV will initially be available in the U.S. and Canada. It will not be available on the computer and will not support any other TV tuner. No DVR component because the focus is on content directly, although Ronen said users could conceivably add a drive for recording to an additional USB input on the back Boxee Box.
"If you are like us then the way you watch TV has changed. The stuff on Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Vudu, Vimeo keeps getting better and you can watch it everywhere," Boxee CEO Avner Ronen said in a blog post. "You end up watching less traditional TV, but continually pay more for it, which doesn't make much sense."
Live TV news that the club will basically be a HD antenna decided earlier speculation that the add-on will complement the cable services such as Comcast, Dish Network and DirecTV. GigaOM, who had a hand in the new Boxee software update that includes support for live TV, unable to connect, and now we know why.
