eWoo eFizz Travel Speaker For iPod Review

While iPod speakers are a dime a dozen these days, it’s often hard to find a really good one for the money. Ewoo, while sounding like an overseas car manufacturer actually makes a travel speaker dock for the iPod called the eFizz Travel.

Boasting up to 20 hours of wireless battery charge, the eWoo eFizz is an ideal companion when the scenario calls for no electrical outlets. Featuring an attractive all black finish the eFizz is head to toe speaker grill. Being one of the smallest iPod speaker docks I have used it is fairly lightweight and easy to hold. My iPod Classic 80g fit very snug and secure and the eFizz had a very cushioned and balanced posture sitting upon any level surface.

Operation was pretty simple overall. Colored lights denoted what was going on with the rechargable lithium-polymer battery and the remote while very basic, performed well. One of the touted features though, the “One Touch Info Button” did not work whatsoever. The user manual CD was vague at best and the email I sent two weeks ago to customer service has yet to be replied to. What it is supposed to be is some on screen iPod interface that shows battery level and some other things but I could never get to it. Not that it was a truly imperative feature it would have been nice to explore all of the eFizz’s offerings. Note: I did actually see this screen twice for a couple seconds at a time. It was totally random and I could not get back to it. All it displayed was the level of charge for the eFizz.

The eFizz connects easily with iTunes via supplied USB cable which is cool if you have it near your computer for transferring music or downloading new firmware. Note that you need to have power supplied to the eFizz in order for it to sync to iTunes. Though the eFizz has no real body controls to speak of, it’s easy to scroll through the actual iPod as it sits in the dock. What I would like to see most of these travel docks are storage areas for the remote and power cord so there’s not so many loose pieces. Also of note is that while wireless, the eFizz will not charge your iPod.

Sound wise I was’nt super impressed. The max volume wasn’t all that loud and the speakers were a bit tinny. Not that they were bad, they just sounded really small, because they are. At low volumes everything sounded fine as long as it didn’t have to compete with any extraneous noise. There was a bit of volume muffling that wasn’t totally distracting but noticeable to say the least. By my bed I did enjoy the low volume as everything sounded clear and crisp.

What will make the eWoo eFizz Travel stand out amongst the hundreds of speaker docks will be its wireless capabilities, long battery charge, and extreme portability. While the sound won’t blow you away, it will be best heard at small gatherings and picnics, or by your bed. FYI, the iPig is still the loudest and best sounding speaker dock I have heard yet.

AT&T Hoping to Keep its Hold on the iPhone Until 2011

AT&T's agreement that makes it the exclusive U.S. provider of the Apple iPhone reportedly expires next year, and not surprisingly this wireless carrier wants to extend it.

The two companies have always made it clear that this exclusivity agreement exists, but both have kept the details hush-hush. When it's supposed to expire hasn't been officially announced, but it will currently come to an end next year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The iPhone has been a huge success for AT&T, and so it's not surprising that the WSJ is also reporting that this carrier wants to extend the exclusivity agreement.

Whether Apple feels the same way isn't covered, but there have been no public signs of dissatisfaction with AT&T.

Following Apple's Plan
There are a great many people who are interested in an iPhone but refuse to switch to AT&T, and this group keeps hoping that the exclusivity agreement between Apple and this carrier will come to an end.

A few of these people mistakenly think that Apple is somehow trapped in this agreement, and if it could just get out then the iPhone would soon be available from Verizon, Sprint, etc. The problem with this theory is that it has been Apple's strategy from the beginning that its smartphone be available from just one source in each country.

The company wanted unusual control over how this device is distributed and serviced, and in order to get that it had to give a wireless phone company unusually exclusive access. Also, limiting the number of carriers that offer a phone greatly simplifies the development and support processes.

TailGater iPod & Instrument Combo Speaker

As a “musician” the very first thing I questioned about the TailGater is whether or not it will sound good. Guitar amps are generally tailored for certain specific frequencies indicative of a guitar, bass, etc. They also are generally mono. So combining an instrument amplifier with an iPod speaker dock sounds weird to me. It could be a speaker system disguised as an amp though. What makes me think this is the internal battery inside the TailGater that can run up to 8 hours and has a level indicator. I think it would be difficult for a true guitar amplifier to power a guitar like that.

Especially if it can achieve high decibel levels. Anyway, the TailGater by Ion Audio has a rugged construction appeal to it and would look very appropriate in the back of an F150 at an Allman Brothers concert. It has a variety of inputs and even comes with a microphone for hollering drunken gibberish in the parking lot at some Nascar event. The specs don’t say whether or not you can have multiple inputs going simultaneously. I think that would be a huge feature for this product especially for a guitar player wanting to play over songs in order to learn them or practice soloing or whatever. I’ll try and get one for review and let you know how it sounds. Available now for $199

TuneUp for your iTunes

Apple Let's Rock Event - new iPod Nano, iPod Touch 2G and iTunes 8

Apple Let's Rock event was very anticipated by every Apple fan or gadget lover, because this is the place to announce new products, models and services. And this time it was really worth waiting for: new iPod Nano 4G, redesigned iPod Touch, small update of Classic and a lot of new colors for Shuffle... Firmware update for iPhone along with iPod Touch, which carries number 2.1, and new version of iTunes program - these announcements would be enough for several events! However, they all came together at once, and this is the small roundup of all announcements made at this Apple event.

Pictures of new iPod Nano made a big buzz in the Internet not so long ago, making this announcement the most anticipated. New Nano was certainly worth waiting for. It is now taller than 3G, and the sides are slightly curved. But what is really different is the screen layout - now it is portrait instead of landscape. Built-in accelerometer controls the display and turns image if iPod is turned on side, making the movie playback more comfortable.


Controls are also shifted to match the image on the screen. It supports all iPod Nano 3G games, however, they must be played in landscape mod. New Nano has totally revamped interface, somehow resembling that seen on the iPod Touch. Battery life was increased, and now it is 24 hours for music and 4 hours for video. Even with a hardware upgrade, Nano 4G remained very thin, thinner than any other music player on the market. Prices were announced too - 8 GB will be sold for 149 USD, 16 GB - for 199 USD.

With its new model lineup, Apple introduced a new and interesting feature for all of its music players - Genius mode. This is a feature that will be familiar to all Last.fm users - it can make up smart playlists from songs that go great together. When turned on in the iTunes, it sends information from your music library to Apple, synchronizing with their online database and making a playlist that is made perfectly for your taste. Maybe it won't make the perfect playlist the first time, but it will evolve as more songs are collected in the online database. All new player models have that feature in menu - iPod Nano, Classic and Touch.

Classic upgrade was least interesting than others, because the only change is its capacity - now it is 120 GB. It supports all new features including Genius mode, has improved battery life and that's all. Prices are already available - 120 GB model will be sold for 250 USD. Same for Shuffle - it will have no hardware updates at all, Apple just increased the amount of color options, so you can select from four new colors - vibrant blue, green, pink, and red.

iPhone and iTouch firmware upgrade is almost completely a bug-fix release, which removes existing bugs, enables Genius mode, improves battery life and backup speed. It will be free for all iPhone users, but if you own iTouch you will need 10 dollars to buy this upgrade. iPod Touch also had some small update - WiFi antenna looks much better integrated, internal speakers sound better, and it is even thinner now.

iTunes was also reworked, and new, 8 version of famous music manager brings a lot of new interesting options. First of all, it supports brand new Genius feature, helping to collect data for this service to operate correctly. Another new feature found is new method of browsing your music collection, named Grid view. It can display all your albums in grid and gives you possibility to change the size of grid elements so you can navigate through your collection more comfortably. New Genius sidebar can offer you songs from iTunes Store based on your musical tastes, so you would easily discover new music that you will probably like. Visualizer was also improved, now it is way more beautiful and entertaining.

This year's Apple Let's Rock event was rich for new announcements. New and greatly improved interface of iPod Nano, new Genius function, firmware update for iPhone and iTouch, and a new version of iTunes program - many updates for one event, don't you think? Unfortunately, iPod Classic update was very minor, but does it have the need in major redesign? Don't fix what is already working great, that is the main strategy for Apple at this point. Even if new Nano looks so similar to Microsoft Zune, it is still Apple, and it does have many things Zune hasn't - including huge worldwide fan base. So let's wait for other big announcements from Apple - maybe they will include the clipboard ability in the iPhone at last?
